About Bob Lopez, CEO of Nor-Cal Controls

Nor-Cal Controls ES, Inc. (“Nor-Cal”) is a Control and Automation Systems Integrator, providing open architecture DAS and SCADA solutions to the solar PV sector. Bob Lopez founded Nor-Cal in 2006 when he became frustrated working with large OEM’s. This led to his passion to provide customer-focused automation and controls engineering solutions that truly serves the client. Bob is a senior level engineering professional with over 35 years of concentrated experience in the power generation industry, both traditional and renewable. Within the company, Bob also fills the role of Technical Advisor for Nor-Cal’s engineering team, and participates in the technical aspect and challenges of each project.

Here is a topic summary of our session
“How Cypress Creek Renewables Standardized Operations Across its 2.8 GW Portfolio”
Challenges associated with operating a large disparate portfolio
Benefits of standardizing your fleet from an Owner, Operator, and Asset Manager perspective
How CCR was able to standardize it’s growing fleet of assets in less than a year using key vendors
Explore explicit benefits realized by CCR through SCADA, monitoring, and security standardization

Cypress Creek Renewables, Power Factors and GridSME, all considered best in class providers within their respective niche solutions, joined us in this panel and discussed how by providing an open architecture solution that was migratable and supportable into the future, we were able to help improve CCR’s operational efficiency from the enterprise down to the local site level.

What can Nor-Cal Controls do for you?

Nor-Cal Controls is a Control and Automation Systems Integrator, providing open architecture DAS and SCADA solutions to the solar PV sector. Our passion is providing customer-focused automation and controls engineering solutions that best serve you, the customer.

We provide solutions based on proven technology and open architecture (open source) hardware and software, eliminating the need for proprietary service contracts and ongoing fees at project completion.

An open architecture system reduces your cost of ownership long term due to supportability—not only for parts replacement, but by enabling you to use a wide range of control systems integrators to support the system.

Other benefits of using an open architecture solution:

  • 3rd party integration due to open communication protocols
  • Ease of integration with other on-site components
  • Open standards around communication protocols and data formats

If you have a preference for a specific hardware or software platform, we have no problem sourcing the product, doing the engineering and design and then providing it to you for your project. You’re not limited to proprietary equipment and software with Nor-Cal Controls.

Want a Wonderware HMI software system versus a GE Cimplicity HMI system? No problem. Prefer Cisco networking equipment versus Hirschman? No problem. HP servers versus Dell servers? No problem. We’ll make it work.

Nor-Cal Controls (Nor-Cal) has assembled an outstanding team that combines expertise, integrity, honesty and an uncompromising commitment to excellence. Our engineers have an industrial mindset for thoroughness and attention to detail, tempered with the ambition to provide designs that are cost effective and under budget.

Because we are a small, family owned company, we have a created a culture of people that are friendly and eager to help. Customers continue to choose us because we actually answer the phone and respond to emails. RESPONSIVENESS is paramount at Nor-Cal.

Strongest in Controls

We are one of the few integrators within solar PV that comes from a traditional power generation background (gas and steam turbine controls), which have much more complex controls requirements. And our Power Plant Controller (PPC) solutions can meet the needs of any application (PV + Storage) requiring controls.
